University of Louisville
A Growing Research Enterprise
Since 1998, UofL’s funding from the National Institutes of Health has grown 270 percent, the number of endowed chairs and professorships has grown from 29 to 95 and the number of startup companies spun off from UofL research has grown from zero to 14.
The impact of Kentucky’s Research Challenge Trust Fund, known as or Bucks for Brains, is evident with $200 million raised for Louisville alone and a vast majority of it going to the Health Science’s Center. UofL’s Programs of Distinction – a designation that includes Cardiovascular Research – garnered more than $44 million in extramural support in 2005, with just over half of the total attributable to projects with Bucks for Brains faculty as the principle investigator.
This is significant because it demonstrates that a critical mass of nationally and internationally-recognized faculty attract others in their field and help strengthen the overall program of research at the university.
